Hiking friends are the best kind of friends to have.

I think it’s because they ‘get it’…they understand the need to bag or peak, or seek solace in nature.

A few weeks ago I was feeling kind of discouraged. As you probably noticed Hike Like A Woman grew really big, really fast. I wasn’t prepared for the growth at all. I was excited to see it…but I was also kind of bummed out. The fast growth meant that people were tossing negative vibes our way without even understanding what our community is all about.

While I was trying to sort all of this out a thought came to mind.

Outdoor women need each other. That’s why we’re here.

We need friends who know our heart. We need friends who boost us up, not criticize us and put us down.

My very best friends in the whole world have been friends who have hoisted up a pack and climbed a mountain with me.

They are the friends that encourage me.

They are friends who support our goals, dreams, and passions and they do it while having genuine conversations in the outdoors.

I thought and thought about what makes those friends, my hiker friends, my skier friends, my snowshoe friends my very best friends.

It’s because there’s something awesome about being in the wilderness together.

The mountain is a huge equalizer.

Mother Nature doesn’t discriminate between race, religion, political affiliation or socioeconomic status.  We all get sunburns. We all get blisters. We all get hungry, and tired and cranky. We all experience the good with the bad, the climb with the view together.

When you’re climbing a mountain no one cares what kind of a car you drive or how much money you have in your savings account.

When I’m surrounded by nature with my hiker trash friends I’m less caddy. I’m less judgmental, critical and gossipy. Nature brings out the best in me.

I think it has something to do with shared experience- we all smile when we see a beautiful view or watch a toddler walk down a trail for the first time. We all laugh at silly jokes and sigh when our children start whining halfway through a hike.

And that’s the whole point. We need that positivity, that strength. We need that bond.

It doesn’t matter whether we’re on the same trail or just connected via the world wide web thousands of miles apart.

Some of the best days I have are the ones where it’s me and a bunch of my tired Mom friends schlepping our kids up a mountain. We need each other, and those are memories that I cherish.

Do you think that outdoor women need each other?

  1. I LOVE this! We do need each other and HLAW is a great community. I so live being apart of it! I believe women need each other to encourage and build each other up. HLAW does just that!

  2. This is 100% right! You develop a different kind of friendship with your outdoor friends as well. A deeper bond. Nature allows for real conversation, but also for comfort in ‘silent’ moments; with no need to ever fill those silences. I love and appreciate my friendships with other outdoor women so much. And some may not even live in the same area any long but we always have that bond, and know even if its been years, we can meet for a hike and pick up right where we left off.

Your blog, and pages have quickly become my favorite over the last few months. Celebrate your success and the positivity you’re spreading. The ones spreading negative vibes can go sit on the couch and watch their t.v. 😉

  3. Love the concept of HLAW. Wondering where elder women fit in the community. I wonder how many young women remember that it was their mothers or grandmothers who first lit that spark within.

  4. Absolutely! We need each other, we need our laughs and experiences (good or bad) we need our hugs and know that we are not alone in this unpredictable world. I’m back in the State after 5 years living in Japan. I Love hiking (hiked Mt. Fuji) awesome experience. I don’t like to hike alone, so looking for women close to San Antonio, Cibolo, Schertz áreas in Texas. I Love all women because God made us unique and we have to feel that way at all times and make other women feel that way as well. Blessings 🙏❤️
