Name: Helina Monique Alvarez
Hometown: Riverside, CA
Occupation: Assistant Manager at Alamosa and Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge.
Favorite place to hike: Pretty much anywhere with trees. After living in Humboldt County I got spoiled by those gorgeous, giant Redwoods.
What’s one book you’d recommend to a friend and why: I don’t read as often as I would like, but one book I keep hearing rave reviews from is “All the Single Ladies” unmarried women and the rise of an independent nation. Author Rebecca Traister breaks the glass ceiling how women now are breaking society’s view on their independence, sexuality, money, work and so much more.
What’s your favorite thing to cook for dinner: It’s a tie between ceviche and breakfast burritos. For those of you that may not know what ceviche is, it’s probably best described as a Mexican seafood salad. I make mine with shrimp, crab, cilantro, tomatoes, red onions, celery, lemon juice and dash of salt. It’s wonderful on a hot day on top of a tostada. Mmmmm, now I want ceviche. I have the recipe written down if anyone is interested in making it!
What’s your favorite quote: “Sometimes the thing we fear the most, is the most worthwhile” -Unkown
This quote really resonates with me. I’m not taking about walking down a dark alley cause it scares you, but facing fears like love, heights, particular projects. I usually say this quote, when I feel like I’m about to give up, and it’s been true for a lot of scenarios for me. Allowing me to not live in fear
If you could hike with anyone, dead or alive whom would it be and why: Ok seriously, these are hard questions… I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one. So I’ll pick two. My first one would be Maya Angelou. I think the reasons are pretty transparent. This lady was a visionary and I’ve found her quotes to be amongst some of the greatest. I would love to pick her brain and hear her stories. My second choice would be Eric Kilgore. Eric was your good ‘ol all American boy. He was intelligent, super athletic, had a heart of gold, and very handsome might I add. My first year of college, Eric got into a fatal car accident. Although it was one of most difficult times in my life, he changed my view on life forever, and for that I would always be grateful to know such an amazing human being.
What the one piece of gear that always has a place in your backpack: Chapstick, I know it probably sounds girly, but I’m not a fan of chapped lips.
If you could drop what you’re doing right now and had unlimited funds what’s the one place you’d go hiking: Camino de Santiago. In the Middle Ages the Camino de Santiago was a pilgrimage for those on a spiritual journey. To this day, people still take this pilgrimage. There are multiple routes from France to Spain. I hope one day I have the time and money to attempt my spiritual journey.

Is there anything else you’d like to add: It is literally hard to describe into words just how much I’m looking forward to being an ambassador with this group of women. The adventures, the trails, and of course the friendship!
