Jenn Wanders

Name: Jenn Wanders

Hometown: I’m from Detroit but Phoenix has been home for the last 7 years.

Occupation: Emergency Department Registered Nurse; amateur photographer; part-time blogger; traveler

Favorite place to hike: Arizona is the most beautiful place I’ve found so far on earth and hands down my most favorite place to hike/explore.

What’s one book you’d recommend to a friend and why: A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron, but be forewarned, you will cry, you will cry A LOT! Why would I recommend a book that is guaranteed to make you cry from beginning to end? Because it’s that good, this book made me love my dog more than I already did which I didn’t think was possible. It’s been several years since I’ve read the book but will still occasionally look at my dog remember the book and need to give her a hug and love her for who she is, who she was, and who she is going to be.

What’s your favorite thing to cook for dinner: I hate cooking with every ounce of my soul, so my husband does most of the cooking. My favorite thing to eat for dinner though is Mexican, from a restaurant!

What’s your favorite quote: “If it doesn’t kill me it will only make me stronger.”

If you could hike with anyone, dead or alive who would it be and why: My little sister. Despite our 18-year difference in age, we are very close. We had very different paths leading us to adulthood, yet are both so similar in our need to explore, adventure, and travel. She lives in Detroit still and it hurts my heart daily that we are so far apart; I would love to have her here in Arizona as my adventure partner.

What’s the one piece of gear that always has a place in your backpack: My Camelback! I’m not sure how I survived life before the Camelback. Hiking in the Arizona heat requires lots and lots of water, even for short hikes. The Camelback makes lugging that much water around so much easier, and it’s hands-free, a big bonus when hiking with the dog!

If you could drop what you’re doing right now and had unlimited funds what’s the one place you’d go hiking: Backpacking through Ireland.

Where can we find you on the internet:

Is there anything else you’d like to add: I’m super excited to be on this journey with you. I look forward to encouraging other women to get outside and explore. My thought is always “If I can do it, anyone can do it”. I’m not athletic at all, I wheeze horribly on any type of incline. I’m extremely clumsy, to the point of losing blood on almost every trail I’ve ever been on! And I’m like a tortoise I’m so slow. Despite all this, I love being outdoors. I love the beauty that surrounds me and I love the sense of peace and calm that I achieve when out on a trail.
