Ruth Schmidt

Name: Ruth Schmidt

Hometown: Pretoria, South Africa

Occupation: I work for an online advertising company, but am actually qualified as a veterinary nurse

Favorite place to hike: It’s so hard to choose! Probably the Northern Drakensberg, specifically the Mnweni Area.

What’s one book you’d recommend to a friend and why: Fly By Night by Frances Hardinge. I love children’s books!

What’s your favorite thing to cook for dinner: At the moment probably something quick and easy! I have a sister living in Japan and since we visited her most of our meals now feature rice 🙂

What’s your favorite quote:  “The world is mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful” by E.E. Cummings

If you could hike with anyone, dead or alive who would it be and why: Any and all of my friends and family! I love hiking with people: each person shows you how to appreciate the outdoors in a different way.

What is the one piece of gear that always has a place in your backpack:  A first aid kit and sunscreen! The South African sun is brutal, and “the nurse” in me gets jumpy if I feel like I’m not prepared for accidents.

If you could drop what you’re doing right now and had unlimited funds what’s the one place you’d go hiking:  Ifidi Pass in the Drakensberg. This was the first hike I ever attempted and we never made it to the top of the escarpment (I was woefully unprepared). I would love to go back and make it to the top this time! I would also love to complete a Drakensberg Grand Traverse across the escarpment!
